Trophic redundancy in benthic fish food webs increases with scarcity of prey items, in the Southern Baltic Sea

چکیده
Bottom trawling is one of the main pressures on benthic ecosystems, directly impacting targeted species and physically disturbing seabed invertebrate communities, in turn indirectly benthivorous fish entire food web structure functioning. To predict cascading effect bottom demersal it crucial to understand trophic interactions between invertebrates. Here, we assessed diet functioning two areas German Baltic Sea, Fehmarnbelt Odra Bank. The community characterized by a high number biomass, contrary Bank which poor with individual abundance but low biomass. We used mixing models based stable isotopes carbon nitrogen combined stomach content analyses estimate at both sites, community-wide indices, derived from compare webs. show that can chose preferential prey items, resulting higher diversity, Bank, feed all available species, redundancy. found generalist behavior likely result scarcity being small individuals. demonstrate differences sites was mainly driven characteristics communities.

Prevalence of anisakin nematodes in fish from Southern Baltic Sea.
Nematodes from the superfamily Ascaridoidea (families Anisakidae and Raphidascarididae) are worldwide distributed parasites. Their live cycles include many species of water invertebrates and teleostean fish as intermediate hosts, and fish, sea mammals or fish-eating birds being definitive hosts. Humans can be infected with some of these parasites after consumption of raw or wrongly processed fi...
متن کاملSeabird Guano Fertilizes Baltic Sea Littoral Food Webs
Nutrient enrichment in coastal marine systems can have profound impacts on trophic networks. In the Baltic Sea, the population of Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) has increased nearly exponentially since the mid-1990 s, and colonies of these seabirds can be important sources of nitrogen enrichment for nearby benthic communities due to guano runoff. In this study we used stable iso...

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

137Cs activity concentrations were determined in samples of macrophytes Polysiphonia fucoides (red algae) and Zostera marina (vascular plant) collected during the entire vegetation season in the Gulf of Gdańsk in the southern Baltic Sea. The measurements showed considerable seasonality of 137Cs activity in both species; an increase of cesium concentrations was observed from spring to autumn wit...
